Family and Friends,
While I have had many global adventures for both work and play, on the morning of June 12, I will do the toughest and scariest thing I have ever done, right here in my backyard. I will jump off a boat by Alcatraz Island, with 6 other members of “Team Cindy” and 2000 other competitors, to participate in the world famous Escape from Alcatraz triathlon, which includes:
- 1.5-mile swim to San Francisco
- 18-mile bike ride climbing to some of the greatest vista points SF has to offer
- 8-mile hilly run around the Golden Gate headlands
Our team’s important cause is research and educational funding for the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (http://www.bafound.org/) and honors the life of Cindy Lee Sherwin. Cindy’s parents founded “Team Cindy” (https://www.teamcindy.org/), who lost her life at my age due to a sudden, ruptured brain aneurysm while training for her first IRONMAN. I am grateful to be healthy and able to fulfill this challenge in her honor with this team, and hope you will Escape from Alcatraz with me.
Since January, I've committed fiercely to Team Cindy and through a series of epic challenges to prepare. I’ve also trained 6-7 days a week to do the thing I thought I couldn't do: the Escape from Alcatraz race. Team Cindy also raises money and awareness about brain aneurysms. As part of doing this monumental race, I’m reaching out for your support -- both in spirit and to fulfill our fundraising goals. I'd be grateful for anything you can give to reach my $2,500 goal and $20,000 team goal. No gift is too small!
Cindy's story deeply resonated with me: we were both training for a first challenging and epic race - grueling swim, bike and run sessions, imagining our exhilaration as we cross the finish line with a smile on our faces. As proud auntie of many -- both blood and other, I can only imagine how devastating it must be for a parent to lose a child, as Cindy's parents experienced. I am grateful to carry her spirit with me through this season and over the finish line. Please join me on this adventure and important cause.
Thank you for your thoughtfulness and in advance for your support. Over the next month, I'm also committed to keep you informed about my training and the big race!
Sending a big virtual hug, fist pump and thank you,
Nelle
