My mom was an amazing mother and my best friend. I couldn’t have asked for a better role model. My mom was dedicated to her work and always expressed her love for her family, friends, and students. She did everything she could for me. Literally, everything. She always put me before herself. I have come to find that the same is true for everyone else she has come into contact with in this world. This says a lot about the type of person she was, more than I could even begin to describe.
My mom showed her love for us in countless ways. I will always remember how she used to leave notes for me. Sometimes she would slip them under my door while I was sleeping, “Have a great day! I love you. Love, Mom.” Sometimes she would place them on my bed while I was at work, “I’ll be home late tonight, but I ordered you your favorite chicken from the Cheesecake Factory. Enjoy! I love you. Love Mom.” Sometimes she would even put a note in the refrigerator or freezer for me to find several days later. I found my half eaten Dairy Queen ice cream she had bought for me on Mother’s Day with a note that said, “Who eats half an ice cream?!” My mom certainly wouldn’t have left any ice cream behind. These notes always made me smile, and sometimes laugh.
On my graduation day, I waved to my mom as she sat in the stands with my brothers. She looked so happy and so proud of me. I never imagined that would be the last time I saw her smiling face. I find comfort in the sight of her being truly happy at that moment. Every day she told me that she loved me and was proud of me. I will continue to make her proud each and every day.
Just one month before she passed, my mom gave me a hand painted tile with a very special quotation on it. The quotation says, “Mothers hold their children’s hands a while, and their hearts forever.” Mom, you will forever be in my heart.
Love,
Geena
